Thought Leadership Programme: More Than Just Good Ideas

A one-year journey to transform insight into influence

In today’s fast-moving and interconnected world, genuine thought leadership goes far beyond having a clever idea. It requires the ability to see systems as a whole, understand their underlying dynamics, and communicate insights that inspire meaningful action. The Thought Leadership Programme by the Logistics Institute of New Zealand is designed to develop these capabilities over the course of one year, combining theoretical rigour, systems thinking, and human-centred design to create leaders who can navigate complexity with clarity and confidence.

Programme Overview

This immersive programme explores the full cycle of thought leadership—from analysing complex systems to shaping impactful, evidence-based communication. Participants will engage with leading-edge ideas and practical tools that allow them to connect, create, and influence within their professional and organisational contexts.

  1. Complexity Theories and Complexity Mapping: Participants will learn to interpret the non-linear, emergent nature of modern challenges such as sustainability transitions and organisational transformation. Through Complexity Mapping, they will chart the real-world relationships, feedback loops, and dynamic interactions within systems—understanding not just what is happening, but why.
  2. Systems Thinking: Building on the foundations of complexity, Systems Thinking offers a holistic lens for decision-making. It encourages participants to see how actions in one part of a system can ripple across others, fostering a sustainable, long-term approach to leadership and innovation.
  3. Theoretical Underpinnings: Strong thought leadership is grounded in evidence and theory. Participants will engage with academic research, conceptual models, and established frameworks that provide intellectual depth and ensure ideas are robust, credible, and actionable.
  4. Conversations and Empathy: True insight emerges through dialogue. This module cultivates empathy as a leadership skill, encouraging participants to engage with diverse voices—from customers and front-line workers to industry peers—to uncover perspectives that enrich system understanding.
  5. Design Thinking: Moving from analysis to action, participants will apply Design Thinking to prototype and test innovative solutions. This human-centred, iterative approach ensures ideas are not only theoretically sound but also practical, inclusive, and effective in real-world contexts.
  6. Skillful Communication: The final stage transforms insight into influence. Participants will develop the ability to communicate complexity with clarity, crafting narratives that resonate across audiences—from boardrooms to factory floors. Storytelling, framing, and visualisation techniques are used to inspire understanding and action.

The Outcome

By the end of the programme, participants will be equipped to:

  • Analyse and map complex systems with confidence.
  • Apply systems and design thinking to solve real-world challenges.
  • Engage and empathise effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Communicate insights in ways that drive meaningful change.
  • At completion of the programme, candidates are appointed as Fellows of the Logistics Instistute of New Zealand.

This is more than professional development—it is a transformation in how leaders see, think, and act.

Thought leadership is not a personality trait. It’s a discipline.

In 2026, Michael plans to join the Master Fellowship in Logistics and Operations, a programme designed to significantly improve his professional skills as a mature well established operations professional. He’s particularly interested in continuous improvement, company culture and risk management. In his fellowship he plans to study the interactions between these aspects in a manufacturing context.

This fellowship will allow Michael to deeply explore these areas. He’ll develop innovative ideas by combining different research methods, such as analysing data from various sources and identifying key themes. This will help him create practical tools and frameworks that can improve how operations are managed.

Michael plans to connect with leading operations professionals in New Zealand through the Logistics Institute’s extensive network. He aims to discuss his research, learn from their experiences, and gain a variety of perspectives. He will also be mentored by a world-renowned academic in operational culture, which will help him refine his ideas.

The fellowship will involve group sessions where Michael can share his ideas with other participants, learn about their projects, and receive valuable feedback. This will broaden his understanding beyond his own topics and inspire new research directions. By presenting his work to the group, he will improve his communication and critical thinking skills.

Towards the end of the programme, Michael will present his findings to a wider audience. He believes that clearly explaining his ideas to others is crucial for understanding his own research. Following this, he will write a detailed article that summarises his findings and their importance for practice. This article will be reviewed by experts in the field, ensuring its quality and contributing valuable knowledge to the operations profession.

Overall, Michael’s participation in the fellowship will be a comprehensive approach to professional development. It combines independent research, collaborative learning, and practical application. By the end of the programme, he will be a well-respected expert in operations, equipped with the knowledge, skills, and connections to make a significant impact in the field.
